The prestigious Banaras Hindu University was founded in the year 1916. It was formerly called The Central Hindu College. Shri Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi soon became an institute of national importance. The 1300 acre campus is located in the Mirzapur district of UP. The varsity has about 140 departments, 14 Faculties, Women's College, 4 Interdisciplinary Centres and also three constitution schools inside the premises. The Banaras Hindu University offers over 350 courses in total at various undergraduate postgraduate and doctoral levels.
The Banaras Hindu University campus houses all the world-class amenities like hostels, library, sports complex, cafeteria, Hospital, auditorium, swimming pool, airstrip and helipad, bookstore, Shopping Complex, ATM, post office, bank etc are present inside the campus for students and faculty staying as residents of the BHU to use. The university also houses one of the best libraries of the country with over 10 lakh books, 1 Lakh journals, 400 current magazines and subscriptions. An e-Library with over 52000 e-books, journals and papers are available for reference in multiple disciplines at the library. Multiple hostel complexes can house together almost 30,000 students at the same time inside the BHU campus. The Shri Vishwanath Temple inside the campus is also one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city.
