Indian School of Mines was established on 9th December 1926 by Lord Irwin, the Viceroy of India. In 1967, it was declared as a deemed to be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The institute was officially converted to the Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad, on 6th September 2016, now formally known as the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad.
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (IE&M) was established in 1977, was restructured and re-christened as the Department of Management Studies, and launched its MBA program in 1997.
IIT(ISM) Department of Management Studies offers various Post Graduate programs, Ph.D. programs, Dual Degree programs in Management Studies.
IIT (ISM) achieved rank at 22nd position in NIRF Overall ranking, 2020. Department of Management Studies was ranked 29th amongst the top management institutes in India by NIRF ranking 2020. The department has been consistently rated as an A/A+ institution by various rating agencies, including AIMA-Business Standard, Business World, Business India, Outlook/C-Four, in their B-School surveys.
The department is continuously moving ahead with the growth and diversification in the business sector by maintaining constant touch with various industries. With the introduction of dual degree programs in Mining, Minerals, and Petroleum Management, the department has taken the lead to emphasize effective management of core sectors.
