Established in 2008, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal (IISER Bhopal) is an autonomous institute that has gained the status of ‘Institute of National Importance. IISER Bhopal was established under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The foundation stone of IISER Bhopal was laid down by Late Shri Arjun Singh on October 8, 2008. The total number of departments in the institute is 10, some of which are the Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Data Science and Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science etc. IISER Bhopal has three centres of excellence. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research was incorporated as ‘Institute of National Importance’ under the umbrella of the NIT (Amendment) Act, 2012 (NIT Act 2007). The Act was further amended in 2014, entitled the NITSER ACT 2014. The campus area of IISER Bhopal is spread over 200 acres of land offering various infrastructural facilities to the students. The total faculty strength at IISER Bhopal is 110 with a student population of 1729. The institute offers BS, BS-MS (dual degree), Integrated Ph.D. and Ph.D. programmes. The college has been ranked 45th in research category in NIRF 2021 ranking. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research has been ranked 50th in the overall category by the NIRF ranking 2021 and 40th in the overall category by NIRF, MHRD, GOI in 2020.
