Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay was established in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai (earlier known as Bombay) as the second IIT in all of India with external financial assistance. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is commonly known as IIT Bombay. The institute is recognised as the 'Institute of Eminence ' by the University Grants Commission. The campus of IIT Bombay covers an area of 550 acres and it has a total of 678 faculty members.
As per NIRF Rankings 2021, IIT Bombay has been ranked 10th in the management category with an overall score of 68.08 whereas, in 2020, the institute was ranked 11th in the same category. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has secured 3rd rank in the engineering, overall and research category in NIRF Rankings 2021. The institute is located in the Powai region of Mumbai (Bombay). The campus is connected to the city of Mumbai via buses, trains and flights. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is approximately 10 km away from IIT Bombay. The domestic airport is approximately 15 km away from the main campus. Kanjur Marg, Vikhroli, or Ghatkopar are the nearest stations to IIT Bombay for students coming by Central Railway. If coming by the Western Railway, Andheri, Bandra, Goregaon or Malad are the nearest stations. The campus is also well connected through local trains. Students can take taxis, auto-rickshaws, BEST buses or local trains to reach the campus.
