Indian Institute of Technology, Madras or IIT, Madras was established as a result of the Indo-German agreement in Bonn, in 1959. IIT Madras is known for its excellence in technical education, innovation, basic and applied research entrepreneurship and industrial consultancy. According to NIRF Ranking 2022, the institute has been ranked 10th in the management category. IIT Madras has secured 1st rank in the engineering and overall category in NIRF 2022 Ranking. The institute has secured 2nd in the research category in NIRF 2022. IIT Madras is an autonomous statutory institute administered by the IIT Council. IIT Madras is a residential institute with a self-contained campus spread over 250 hectares of beautiful wooded land. It consists of nearly 550 faculty, 1250 administrative and supporting staff, sixteen academic departments, various advanced research centres for various disciplines of science, technology and engineering and nearly 100 laboratories classified in a unique pattern.
IIT Madras provides an array of courses at various levels. It provides undergraduate, postgraduate, research, joint degree and IIT Madras online programmes. It also offers an exchange programme for more collaborative learning. IIT Madras is a part of the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), a project by the MHRD which offers online certificate courses in five core disciplines of engineering. It also has a Centre for Continuing Education in place offering programmes for the industry, short-term courses for the engineering faculty and courses under the Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN). The institute offers various B.Tech courses, M.Tech courses, IIT Madras B.Sc online degree courses and other specialisations.
IIT Madras is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The main entrance of the institution is on Sardar Patel Road. The campus is 10 km away from the Chennai Airport, students can reach the campus in 20-25 minutes. Chennai Central Railway station is 13 km away from the campus and the students can reach the campus within 25-30 minutes. The campus is well connected by the city buses and Kasturba Nagar station is preferred while travelling by the Chennai MRTS line.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras has 15 hostels for boys. Rooms are available on a single, double and triple sharing basis. Postgraduate students avail single rooms with internet and LAN facilities provided for every hostel. All the necessary facilities such as washing machines, sports facilities, music rooms, common rooms, etc are available for the students.
