Established as Karnataka Regional Engineering College in 1960, it was transformed into NITK in 2002. Located in Mangalore City, Sri Srinivasa Mallya contributed to the development of NITK Surathkal. A UGC recognised and AICTE approved public university, NITK has been working to provide quality education that focuses on assimilation, generation and dissemination of knowledge.
The institute offers UG and PG programmes in the fields of engineering, science and management. It also offers doctoral degrees in 14 departments under various research areas. The infrastructure includes 11 support centres and 14 academic departments.NITK has signed MOUs with various national and international educational and research institutions. Some of the international organisations include the University of Utah, Michigan State University, and Wolfram Research Inc. National institutes like IIT Guwahati and NITT are also collaborators.
In 2021, QS Asia University Rankings ranked NITK at 401-450. In 2020, NIRF ranked it 33 Overall and 13 in Engineering, The Week ranked it 12 in ‘Best Technical Universities in India', 11 in ‘Top Engineering Colleges in India' and Outlook India ranked NITK 8 in ‘Top Government Engineering Colleges.
The 2020 placement drive saw an average CTC of INR 17 LPA, with a high of INR 43 LPA. The placement rate hovered at 90% as top recruiters from ZS Associates, Fractal Analytics, and Exl Service made offers. More than 250 companies offered internship opportunities alongside job opportunities as well. Moreover, B. Tech and M.Tech graduates have recorded placement rates of 100%.
NITK is considered an ‘Institute of National Importance' for its contributions to the field of science, technology and innovation.
