Operations engineers direct and perform tasks related to solving operational issues within their organization. They analyze and design operations that will improve work flow, handle equipment layout, and help ensure accident prevention. Operations engineers also lead training programs for employees, process cycle times and production records, and help with cost control and reduction. They are also tasked with planning, designing, and modifying current and future designs for facility and equipment layouts. Additionally, these engineers must monitor process changes after their implementation, making changes and offering additional suggestions for improvement as required. Operations engineers' hours may vary depending on the needs of their company; however, they often work during regular business hours. They often divide their time between an office and their organization's production plant.Educational requirements for this position vary by employer; however, a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering or a related field may be mandatory. Relevant certifications are often preferred. Operations engineers must have excellent communication skills, as they must present operations issues and proposals to managers.
