Course Description

Excel is used extensively in the industry. Excel is used by almost all businesses, large and small, to analyze data and perform their daily operations. This course is intended to provide an introduction to Excel. It will give you a basic understanding of Excel, with the goal of allowing you to use it later for advanced topics in Business Statistics. This course was designed to meet the needs of two types of learners: those with very limited Excel knowledge and those who use Excel frequently but only at a superficial level. This course covers basic functions such as reading and formatting data in Excel, organizing data and manipulating it. It also covers advanced features like manipulating data and data manipulations. Excel functionality is explained using simple examples that are easy to understand so that students can easily grasp and apply them.

Students must have access to Microsoft Excel 2010 for Windows in order to complete course assignments. ________________________________________ WEEK 1 Module 1: Introduction to Spreadsheets In this module, you will be introduced to the use of Excel spreadsheets and various basic data functions of Excel. Topics covered include: * Reading data into Excel using various formats * Basic functions in Excel, arithmetic as well as various logical functions * Formatting rows and columns * Using formulas in Excel and their copy and paste using absolute and relative referencing ________________________________________ WEEK 2 Module 2: Spreadsheet Functions to Organize Data This module introduces various Excel functions to organize and query data. The IF, nested IF and VLOOKUP functions are all introduced to Excel learners. Topics covered include: * IF and the nested IF functions * VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP * The RANDBETWEEN function ________________________________________ WEEK 3 Module 3: Introduction to Filtering, Pivot Tables, and Charts This module introduces various data filtering capabilities of Excel. This module teaches you how to apply filters to data to select data. We also explain the Pivot Table which is a powerful tool for data summarizing. Finally, we introduce Excel's charting capabilities. Topics covered include: * VLOOKUP across worksheets * Data filtering in Excel * Use of Pivot tables with categorical as well as numerical data * Introduction to the charting capability of Excel ________________________________________ WEEK 4 Module 4: Advanced Graphing and Charting This module explores various advanced graphing and charting techniques available in Excel. We will start with different line, bar, and pie charts and then introduce scatter plots, pivot charts, and histograms. These charts will be explained and you can build your own. The topics covered are: * Line, Bar and Pie charts • Pivot charts • Scatter plots
