National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar is a government engineering institute. It was formed in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College, and in 2002, it was granted the status of NIT. The vision of the institute is to establish a unique identity by developing high-quality human and knowledge resources in the field of technology. The mission of NIT Silchar is to train young individuals and transform them into responsible engineers, scientists and technologists and inspire them to work towards the betterment of society. National Institute of Technology Silchar ranked 48th under the engineering category in the NIRF 2021 Ranking. In the NIRF Rankings of 2021, the institute has been ranked 93rd in the overall category.
NIT Silchar offers several undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various specialisations. There are a total of 11 departments – Engineering (6), Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management Studies. Each of these departments has a dedicated list of faculties. Each department undertakes several projects. The faculty members are involved in research in different areas of their subjects, which is funded partly by the institute and mostly by the funding agencies.
National Institute of Technology Silchar is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi Road, 8kms away from the southern outskirts of Silchar town in Assam. It is well-connected with various cities through roads and railways. The nearest bus station is ISBT Silchar, from where you can pick an auto to reach the NIT Campus. The distance of the Silchar railway station from the campus is around 10 km. There are direct flights to Silchar from major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Imphal and Guwahati. The distance of the institute campus from the airport is approximately 35 km. You can hire a private taxi from the airport to reach the NIT Silchar campus.
NIT Silchar has a health institute with a Senior Medical Officer. Apart from allopathic medicines, it also offers homeopathy and dental treatments.
