Set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Department, Government of India, in the year 2008, the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar (or IIT Ropar) is one of the eight new IITs set up to expand the reach of quality technical education in the country. In NIRF Rankings 2021, the college secured in 19th and 49th ranks in engineering and research categories. The college is recognised as an 'Institute of National Importance' by the Government of India. The campus of the institute covers an area of 500 acres and it has a total of 158 faculty members.
The college offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in various specialisations along with five-year integrated dual degrees. The institute offers a total of 46 courses. IIT Ropar also has a strong collaboration with national and international institutions, namely Aston University UK, Imperial College of London, Simon Fraser University of Canada, and the University of Glasgow Scotland in the UK. The various collaborations enable the institute to invite experts from the industry, academia, and clinical community to organise numerous talks and symposiums. The campus of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has a large number of facilities for students.
The college is situated at Ropar (also known as Rupnagar) in Punjab. The nearest bus station is Rupnagar Old Bus Stand in Chotta Khera, about 8 kilometres from the campus. The nearest railway station is Rupnagar Railway station, located at about 2kms from the institute. Candidates can also fly in at Chandigarh airport situated about 60 kilometres away and take the National Highway NH-21 to the IIT Ropar campus. Ropar town has a robust railway and road connectivity for students to arrive at the IIT Ropar campus.
