The university was established in 2007 by the government of India. The university has six schools of studies. Sikkim University also has three research centers, namely Centre for Endangered Languages funded by the UGC, Maulana Azad Centre for Northeast Studies funded by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkata and Centre for Bioinformatics funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The university is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade A. Sikkim University Gangtok is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The popular courses offered by Sikkim University are B.A., B.P.A., M.A., M.Sc., M.Com, M.B.A, M.C.A., M.P.A., M.T.T.M., M.Ed., L.L.M, M.Phil and Ph.D. Admission to UG and PG programmes are done on the basis of merit score of entrance test, CAT, except for M.B.A, where candidates having valid score of CAT/MAT/CMAT are exempted from CAT (Common Admission Test) and after that, candidates have to appear for group discussion and interview.
