Mumbai University (MU) was established in 1857 as a result of Wood’s Education Dispatch. The varsity is one of the first three universities of India. The university is accredited by NAAC with an ‘A’ grade and was ranked at 65th position in NIRF University Rankings 2020. However, in NIRF 2021 Ranking, Mumbai University has been ranked 71st in the university category. The university has been ranked 96th in the overall category in the NIRF rankings of 2021. Mumbai University has been granted the status of University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The varsity has a total of 5 campuses i.e. Fort (main campus), Ratnagiri, Kalina, Kalyan and Thane. Mumbai University main campus has 60 departments. Currently, there are 762 colleges affiliated to MU. The varsity’s vision is to build skilled manpower which will help in nation building through creativity and innovation.
Mumbai University has six faculties i.e., arts, commerce, law, technology, science and sports. The university has 143 courses in the fields like arts and science, management, technology etc. Some of the MU courses are Advanced Diploma in Arabic, B.Com Accounting and Finance, M.Tech. Green Technology. Furthermore, the university offers various regional, national and international language courses. Mumbai University offers admission on the basis of merit of the last qualifying exam and entrance examination.
To accommodate outstation students the university has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. In order to match the technical advancement in the education system, Mumbai University offers the option of virtual classrooms to its students. The university organizes various extracurricular activities for its students. Every year intercollege tournaments of sports like cricket, football, table tennis etc. are conducted by Mumbai University.
