Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur is one of the country's thirty NITs. The institute was granted deemed to be university status by the Indian government. VNIT Nagpur is a nationally significant institution that was founded in 1960 as part of a scheme funded by the Government of India and Maharashtra. The institute was formerly known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering. The college was established in June 1960 by combining the State Government Engineering College, which had been operating in Nagpur since July 1956. Being one of the 30 NITs in India, it is recognised as an “Institute of national importance”. This co-educational public institution has a faculty strength of 191 faculty members and a total student enrollment of 3903. The institute has secured 17th rank in the architecture category, 30th rank in the engineering category and 54th rank in the overall category in NIRF ranking 2021.
It is spread across 215 acres of land and provides a whole range of facilities for the students. Some of the facilities are separate hostels for boys and girls, gym, library, cafeteria, auditorium, medical hospital, WiFi, IT infrastructure, laboratories, alumni associations, and guest room. The university offers a total number of 51 programmes at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. The main departments of study are science, engineering and architecture/planning. As a research institution, it offers four main centres of excellence - CAD/CAM centre, Material Engineering Centre, Centre for Water Resource and Centre for Remote sensing.
VNIT Nagpur is located in Ambazari, Nagpur, Maharashtra, on S Ambazari Road. The nearest airport to the VNIT is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, which is about 5.5 kilometres away. VNIT Nagpur Health centre mainly promotes holistic healthcare and education in regards to preventative measures. Mainly, OPD, yoga, meditation, counselling sort of activities are carried out as regular activities.
