The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune (IISER Pune) was established in 2006 under the Ministry of Education, Government of Indian. The institute has been awarded the status ‘ Institute of National Importance. The institute has seven departments: the Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Data Science, Department of Data Science, Department of Earth and Climate Sciences, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Mathematics and Department of Physics. Presently, the institute hosts the following Centres of Excellence: Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CoESME), (PMMMNMTT), Centre for Energy Science established through DST Nanomission, Centre for Water Research, DBT Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics and National Facility for Gene Function in Health and Disease. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune is spread over 98 acres of land and has a total faculty strength of 119. IISER Pune has been ranked 16th in the research category and 24th in the overall category in NIRF rankings 2021.
