Certified general accountants (CGAs) provide auditing and accounting services to various companies and review their employers' financial reporting systems to ensure that they adhere to government laws and regulations, corporate rules, and industry standards. They must always provide accurate analyses and reports of their financial data and develop and maintain financial reporting systems, procedures and policies for their company.A bachelor's degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field is generally required for this position, and candidates with Certified Public Accountants (CPA) certifications may be preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is highly beneficial, and candidates must be willing and able to learn their employers' computer systems, as well. CGAs may be required to train, mentor, or coach new accountants, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are also important.Those in this position prepare quarterly, semi-annual, and annual financial reports for leadership review. They also prepare data and cash reconciliation, journal entries, investment gains and losses, accounts receivable and payable and other relevant information in a timely matter for use in these reports. They must also stay up-to-date with all government (federal, state and local) laws, rules and regulations and adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
