Course Description

This course will examine specific strategies for community organizing in order to achieve social justice in a democratic society.

It examines the core concepts of social justice as well as practical steps to bring people together to establish goals and priorities, assess community needs and assets, create action plans and support their implementation. It also contains information about how to create core groups, strengthen organizational capacity, and develop strategies for reaching out to allies and constituents.

Each person learns differently so the course offers a range of learning options, information on successful programs, individual instruction, small group exercises, and hands-on materials to problem solve and plan your program. You can do these activities individually, with a small number of people, or together with many groups in a campaign.

This course is based on work with community activists in Detroit, an area that is rapidly becoming more diverse and segregated. It is for anyone who wants to make a difference in their communities.

Our purpose would be fulfilled if you could take the course with an open mind and end with plans in your hands.
