Learn Basics of Linux with this edX Course

Course Overview

Linux powers over 1% of the world's supercomputers. It also powers most of the servers that power the Internet. Linux is found in many architectures: mainframes, server, desktop, mobile, and a wide range of hardware.

Upon course completion, you will be able to use the Graphical User Interface (GUI) as well as the command line to gain a working knowledge of Linux. This course will cover the most common tools and techniques Linux administrators and users employ to accomplish their daily work (in a Linux environment).

Introduction to Linux course by edX is for computer professionals who are new to Linux and have had little or no exposure to it, regardless of whether they work solo or in an enterprise. This will allow you to navigate through all major Linux distributions easily. The acquired skills will allow you to work as a system administrator, user, or developer.

Course Structure

It is a self-paced, well-curated beginner-level course spread over 14 weeks. The program is taught online by experienced faculty members. It requires learners to put in 7 hours per week in order to match the course pace.

Jerry Cooperstein, one of my instructors for this curriculum, has been working with Linux since 1994, developing and training in both the kernel and user space. He is responsible for all training content at The Linux Foundation.

The course covers a lot of interesting subjects, with (usually) good explanatory videos and walkthroughs. Here, you will get a lot of hands-on experience writing code. Best of all, you will have a working knowledge of Linux from a graphical and command-line perspective. Some of the top skills you develop include DevOps, Linux, writing and understanding code constructs, etc.

Insider Tips

In order to get the best out of this course, below I have included an important tip that I think you might find useful.

Assessment and Grading Criteria

The assessment requires completing assignments and undertaking projects under various modules throughout the degree. These can be research-based or concept specific. The evaluations are designed to ensure continuous student engagement with the program and to encourage learning.

Final Take

I’m currently an undergraduate student exploring the concerned niche. I’d recommend this course to the novice aspirers of this domain as per the requirement of your career. According to me, this course is relevant in 2022, and as industries grow, you have to learn new things and study about new technology.

But before that, you have to make your fundamentals strong and this is what the course will provide here. And personally, if anyone is trying to work in the cybersecurity sector, then having knowledge of Linux is a must.
