Course Description

Science and technology are driving our world more and more. STEM education is gaining in importance.

This course will teach you how to share key physics, space science and astronomy knowledge with students while also teaching transferable skills that will help them in their future careers.

How does science impact students' perceptions of science?

This course will enable you to understand the perspectives of students and how they interact with science.

You'll be able to use space physics and/or astronomy as context and will have the opportunity to increase your science knowledge and teach in a way that encourages a lifetime interest in science.

Secondary school is where students start to seriously think about future career options.

Secondary science is vital in areas such as maths, literacy and creativity. It helps to find new ways of investigating outstanding questions. Secondary science provides young people with a platform to develop critical thinking and analytical skills.

You'll not only help students build STEM knowledge but you will also learn how to support them to develop skills that will be useful for their future jobs.

ROG Astronomers will lead this course and offer their expert scientific knowledge in physics as well as astronomy.

They teach more than 40,000 students a year onsite at Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Explain scientific phenomena that often come up when teaching secondary level space science and astronomy in an accurate and comprehensible way for your students, considering their prior knowledge and common misconceptions

Discuss student and teacher perceptions of science and use this to inform your teaching practise

Explore a range of resources that could be used when teaching physics and astronomy and how they could be used to cover multiple disciplines of science along with important skills through working scientifically

Reflect on how science is taught in classrooms and explore different ways of approaching it

Identify what science capital is, the dimensions used to measure it and why it is an important consideration when teaching science
