Established in 1929, Annamalai University is a state university. The university was founded when Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar handed over Sri Minakshi College to the local government to establish it as a university. Annamalai University is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of ‘A’. The varsity has 10 faculties namely Arts, Science, Marine Sciences, Indian Languages, Engineering and Technology, Education, Fine Arts, Agriculture, Medicine and Dentistry and 49 departments of study offering programmes at UG, PG and doctoral levels across various disciplines. The university is located in Annamalainagar, Tamil Nadu.
The institute has secured 166th rank in the engineering category in NIRF 2021 ranking. The university has secured 40th rank in the medical category in NIRF 2021 ranking. The university has been ranked 16th in the pharmacy category by the NIRF in 2021. The varsity has obtained 15 patents and has 40 MoUs with research partners like FAO, IRRI and USDA. Annamalai University has collaborated with various universities/institutions such as the University of Malaya, Malaysia, University of Highlands & Islands, Scotland, Tennessee Technological university(TTU), USA, Kumamoto University, Japan to name a few.
