Marketing directors are accountable in directing and managing marketing activities on behalf of their company. They supervise their company's marketing personnel and define the extent of their marketing needs and requirements. Their primary responsibilities include preparing plans, budgets and concepts to ensure successful marketing campaigns and also helping to resolve issues within the team and ensuring communication with vendors, clients and other management within their organization. They also have the responsibility of encouraging dialogue within their company regarding the needs and requirements of marketing as well as the needs of customers. Marketing directors assist in brainstorming ideas, recommend suitable technology for completing marketing tasks, and work with marketing experts to adjust strategies and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing initiatives. They gather data and improve methods of research to enhance the performance of marketing in the future.
An undergraduate degree in business or a related area is usually required for this job. Experience in marketing is required in addition to managerial experience is usually mandatory or preferential. Certifications in marketing can be helpful. Marketing directors should have exceptional abilities to solve problems and the ability to manage multiple tasks and be able to perform well in a group or independently with little supervision. They must also be able to utilize computers to answer questions or concerns, monitor the progress of marketing projects and approve them.
