Introduction

What is Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager?

DLM is used for managing the life cycle of AWS resources.

DLM automates the creation, retention and rotation of EBS Volumes and EBS Snapshots.

It uses the CloudWatch Events and CloudTrail capabilities to provide backups of EBS volumes attached EC2 Instances for no additional cost.

It can't be used to automate creation, retention, rotation, and deletion of instance store-backed AMI.

Automating EBS Volumes can help you with the following:

You can protect your data by having the most recent backup

AMI created with the most recent data, apps, or software.

Retaining backups is a way to meet compliance requirements.

You can reduce storage costs by deleting old backups.
