Established in the year 1962, Shivaji University is a public university named after the great Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha empire Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university was ranked at 28th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) University Ranking 2020. Shivaji University campus covers an area of 853 acres and it has 280 colleges affiliated to it. With a CGPA of 3.52, Shivaji University is accredited with an ‘A++’ grade by NAAC. Shivaji University Kolhapur has 34 postgraduate departments. As per the official website, the mission of the university is to serve the society needs by encouraging, generating and promoting excellence in research and extension activities.
The university provides admission to 217 courses. It offers courses at undergraduate, postgraduate diploma, postgraduate, integrated and doctoral levels. Shivaji University Kolhapur provides both entrance based admission and merit-based admission, depending on the programme. MAH MBA CET scores are taken into consideration for admission in the M.B.A. programme. The university has collaboration with numerous universities and institutes to provide exposure to students. A few of them are Yeungnam University, South Korea, University of Portsmouth, England etc.

The university is situated at Vidya Nagar, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Kolhapur Airport is nearest to the university and it is located 6.1 km away from the campus. Kolhapur Railway Station (5.1 km away from the campus) and Shalini Palace Bus Stop (7.5 km away from the campus) are the nearest railway station and bus stop to the varsity respectively.
It’s library is known as Barr. Balasaheb Khardekar Knowledge Resource Center (BBKKRC). The library has a rich collection of 3,67,341 print documents that includes journals, theses, books, manuscripts etc. Shivaji University library is also equipped with over 9000 e-journals and it has subscription of 54 online e-journals. A heading hall with wifi connectivity and a seating capacity of 800 people is also there at the library.
