After the Independence of India, the West Bengal Government with the concurrence of the Govt. of India made necessary legislation for the establishment of Jadavpur University on December 24, 1955. The campus is spread over 88 acres of land. Jadavpur University is ranked 8th according to the NIRF Ranking for university category, 2021. As per NIRF Rankings 2021, the university has been ranked 17th in the research category and 14th in the overall category. JU Kolkata has established itself as one of the top universities. It offers a vast number of courses with the commitment of faculty members toward advanced study and research.
The generous donations were made to establish the National Council of Education. The major donors were Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik, Brojendra Kishore Roy Choudhary, Maharaja Suryyo Kanto Acharya Choudhury and Sir Rashbehari Ghosh. The first principal of the Bengal National College was Sri Aurobindo. Rabindranath Tagore also served as a teacher in the Bengal National College. Jadavpur University offers numerous courses in the disciplines of Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology. The University is recognised by UGC and approved by AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education).
