Institute Overview

Kyoto University (or KyotoU) is a public university that conducts research in Kyoto, Japan. It was founded in 1897 and is the second-oldest university in Japan. KyotoU consistently ranks among the top two universities in Japan, Asia's top ten, and the top fifty higher education institutions in the world.

KyotoU was founded on the principles of freedom of academic culture. It currently has three campuses, ten Faculties and eighteen graduate schools. There are also thirteen Research Institutes and twenty-two Research and Educational Centers. Japan's second largest academic library, the Kyoto University Library has more than 7 million volumes. KyotoU is also one of three Designated National Universities. It was also a Top Type university under the Top Global University Project. The university's net assets stood at 316 billion JPY as of March 2019. KyotoU also has partnerships with other academic institutions.
