The University of Texas Medical Branch is a public health science center located in Galveston, Texas. It is part the University Of Texas System. UTMB is the oldest Texas medical school and employs approximately 11,000 people. It received an A endowment of $560 millions in February 2019. UTMB was established in 1891 as University of Texas Medical Department. Since then, it has expanded from a single building with 23 students and 13 faculty to over 70 buildings, more that 2,500 students, and more than 1,000 faculty. It boasts four schools, three institutes of advanced study, a comprehensive library, four hospitals on site (including an affiliated Shriners Children's Hospital), numerous clinics that offer primary and specialized care, and many research facilities. The primary missions of UTMB are health sciences education, medical and research (it houses the A Galveston National Laboratory) and health care services. Its emergency department at John Sealy Hospital has been certified as a Level 1 Trauma Center. It serves as the primary trauma facility for a nine county region in Southeast Texas. It is also one of three Level 1 Trauma center in Southeast Texas.
