EMTs, also known as emergency medical technicians also known as EMTs, are employed in ambulances and are able to respond to emergencies. A basic EMT is also known as an EMT-B, which translates to basic emergency medical technician.
EMT-Bs work with emergency medical technician-intermediates and emergency medical technician-paramedics in an ambulance, and with anyone they are assisting. They also collaborate with doctors and nurses to provide the medical services patients require. Because they are entry-level workers EMT-Bs aren't trained to provide extensive medical treatment to those who require it. Instead they provide treatments at the scene of the incident, such as making splints to fix fractured bones, taking the vitals of a patient, dressing wounds, and administering oxygen. They also are responsible for transporting patients to hospital. Because emergencies can occur anytime, the times of work can be very different. For instance, an EMT-B may work during the all hours of the day and night, working in shifts of eight hours or 12 hour shifts.
High school education is necessary for EMT-Bs, along with training provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) For NHTSA training, the participants are required to must attend classes and also clinical rotations in emergency situations. But it is mandatory to continue their education for EMT-Bs after they have obtained their certification.
