Radiographers work with the medical equipment (particularly the X-ray method) to produce images of patients that doctors can use to diagnose diseases and injuries. They usually work in large clinics, hospitals and as part of a dedicated radiography company that receives the need for referrals to the procedures. Radiographers set up and prepare the equipment needed for every patient, and also help keep the patient comfortable during the procedure while making medically relevant images. Radiographers differ from radiologists. Radiographers typically create diagnostic images before transferring the images to a medical professional to interpret, whereas radiologists can participate in interpretation and imaging.
Typically, radiologists see patients who have been referred by an doctor of primary care or an an emergency doctor who has performed an initial examination. After the exam, the radiographer will be given instructions on what information to obtain from X-rays or other imaging. The radiographer determines which equipment can best produce the needed images, and then creates the images. Radiographers are also able to conduct follow-up imaging to monitor the progress of treatment, and also to ensure the correct functioning of the imaging equipment within the department in which they work.
The majority of radiographers start their profession by attending courses at vocational or community college that provide specific training in this field. Many employers or jurisdictions require radiographers to be certified in this field, too.
