Institute Overview

Established in 1926 as the Indian School of Mines in Jharkhand to meet the need for a trained workforce in mining activities, it changed to an IIT as we know it today. Granted the status of a deemed university in 1967, IIT Dhanbad is better known as IIT(ISM). The institute has evolved with time to become a technology education institute. Their mission is to be a premier technical and scientific education institution, where initiative is nurtured, and a cultural ethos is maintained. 

The institute offers a host of programmes like B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc. and MBA. It also offers doctoral degrees. Through its 18 departments and five interdisciplinary centres, it offers courses in various branches of Engineering, Management, Pure and Applied Science, and Humanities. The faculty is highly experienced, reputed and accredited, having a majority of PhD holders and award winners. IIT(ISM) has also collaborated with institutes in the US, Africa, Russia and even Iceland and has produced professionals who have excelled in various areas in their profession. Some renounced alumni are Gulshan Lal Tandon (former Chairman, Coal India Ltd), Harsh Gupta (Indian Seismologist) and Rabi Narayan Bastia (Global Head of Exploration, Lime Petroleum). 

IIT(ISM) rankings for 2020 were 22 Overall and 12 for Engineering by NIRF, 201-250 by Times Asia University Rankings, and 13 by Week Survey of Engineering colleges. In 2021, EduVidya ranked the Institute 15 under Top 100 Government Engineering colleges and 12 under Top 100 Emerging Engineering colleges. This institute is UGC recognised, and AICTE accredited. 

Hosting over 130 companies in 2020, IIT Dhanbad placed a vast percentage of its students, especially in IT, Finance, Oil and Natural Gas, and Core sectors. The top recruiters included Barclays, Microsoft and Toppr, with an average CTC offer of INR 15 LPA. The 2021 placement drive has seen top companies like Bloomberg, Google and Byte Dance, and the highest CTC to be offered has been INR 90 LPA, by Bloomberg. 

IIT(ISM) has contributed to the development and growth of Mineral and Petroleum Mining and Exploration in India and overseas, alongside building research collaborations to advance technology further.
