IIT Kharagpur is the first Indian Institute of Technology established in India. Formally inaugurated on 18th August 1951, IIT Kharagpur was, in its infancy, housed in the historic Hijli Detention Camp, Kharagpur. Spread over a huge area of 2100 acres and is the biggest among all the IITs. IIT Kharagpur offers 119+ undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, research and dual degree programmes through its 19 departments, 9 Centres of Excellence, 13 schools and 25 Research and Development Units. The courses are offered in the Engineering, Management, Physical Sciences and Law domain. IIT Kharagpur has a total of 650 full-time faculty members and more than 11,000 students at the campus.
Students can also pursue inter-institutional programmes at IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with other national and international universities and colleges. The list of collaborative institutes of IIT Kharagpur includes IIM Calcutta, University of Melbourne and Curtin University of Technology amongst others. As per NIRF Rankings 2021, the institute has been ranked 3rd in the architecture category, 9th in the management category, 5th in the law and engineering categories, 5th in the research category and 6th in the overall category. The NIRF Ranking 2020 of IIT Kharagpur for the architecture category was 1st, 5th for the management and engineering category, 4th in law and 5th in the overall category. Research and academics are driven through their 9 centres of excellence some of which are Artificial Intelligence, Safety Engineering and Analytics, etc.
IIT Kharagpur is located in the city of Kharagpur in the state of West Bengal, India. It is 5kms away from Kharagpur Railway station which connects it to all major cities across the country. Kolkata’s Howrah Railway station is 127 kilometres away which is a bigger junction for train travel. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is 140 kilometres which is approximately 3 hours away by cab. There are almost daily flights to all important cities in India from here as well as international flights to all important countries around the globe. Kharagpur Bus Station is 12 km from the campus.
IIT Kharagpur has 16 halls for boys. All accommodation halls are equipped with 24-hour electricity, mess facility, high-speed Wi-Fi, and LAN.
