The university was established in 1980 by the Manipur University Act. It was converted from state university to central university in 2005. Manipur University Imphal campus is spread over an area of 287 acres of land. The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade A. Manipur University is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university has many affiliated colleges. The university also has a centre for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The mission and vision of the university is to disseminate advanced knowledge through innovative teaching-learning process and nurture professionals for the welfare of the state.
