Burdwan University is a public state university established in 1960. The university is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). NAAC has accredited varsity with an ‘A’ grade. University of Burdwan covers an area of 316 acres and there are 228 faculty members at the university. Presently, more than 100 colleges are affiliated to Burdwan University. As per the official website, the university mission is to create a vibrant knowledge pool of students. The varsity offers courses at two levels - undergraduate and postgraduate. The university has secured 85th rank in the University category in NIRF 2021 Ranking with an overall score of 39.98 out of 100. It had secured 92nd rank in the same category in NIRF 2020 Rankings.
A few of the courses offered by the university are B.A. (Hons), B.Ed., M.C.A., M.B.A. etc. The varsity provides admission to PG courses via merit based (60% seats) and entrance based (40% seats). Merit based admission in PG courses is only offered to Burdwan University graduates. The university accepts GATE and CAT/MAT/CMAT/XAT for admission in M.Tech. and M.B.A. courses respectively. For admission in M.A. Mass Communication, M.Lib.I.Sc., M.P.Ed., M.Ed., M.Sc. Environmental Science, M.Sc. Biotechnology and M.Sc. Geospatial Science courses admission to all the seats is done via entrance examination conducted by the varsity.
