Santa Cruz, California's University of California, Santa Cruz is a public land grant research university. It is one of the ten University of California campuses that has been designated a Public Ivy. The campus is located on Monterey Bay at the Santa Cruz coast. It covers 2,001 acres (810 ha), of rolling hills with views of the Pacific Ocean.

Founded in 1965 by UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Cruz was founded with the intent to offer a cross-disciplinary undergraduate education, innovative teaching methods, and contemporary architecture. Ten small colleges make up the residential college system. They were created as an extension of Oxbridge's collegiate university system.

UC Santa Cruz is a "R1: Doctoral University - Very high Research Activity" classification. It is a member of Association of American Universities (the most prestigious alliance of research Universities in the United States and Canada).
