University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) was established in 2003 through the UPES Act, 2003 of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand. The university is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The varsity is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It is also known as UPES Dehradun. The campus of the varsity is spread over an area of 44 acres. There are a total of 561 faculty members at the university. As per the official website, UPES Dehradun's mission is to develop industry-focused professionals.

It offers a total of 173 courses at diploma, UG, PG and doctoral levels. UPES got the 46th position in NIRF Ranking 2021 in the management category whereas it was ranked 66th in the NIRF Ranking 2020 in the management category. In the NIRF Rankings of 2021, the university has been ranked 25th in the law category. According to NIRF Rankings, the university has been ranked 91st in the engineering category in 2021 whereas it was ranked 167th in NIRF Ranking 2020 in the same category. The university has secured the 100th rank in NIRF University Ranking 2021.

The diploma and undergraduate pharmacy courses offered by the university are recognised by the Pharmacy Council of India. The Bar Council of India has recognised law courses of UPES Dehradun. B.Tech Chemical Engineering and B.Tech Automotive Design are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The university offers admission on merit and entrance exam basis. University of Petroleum and Energy Studies Dehradun has collaborated with numerous overseas universities. Some of them are the University of Adelaide, University of Calgary etc.
