A typical avionics technician will be responsible for repairing and maintaining electronic systems in an aircraft, such as radio communication, aircraft navigation, weather radar systems, engine controls, and any other electronic instruments involved with the operation of an aircraft. An avionics technician will also be required to perform troubleshooting on electronic parts until a diagnosis is reached. Many times, the avionics technician will be required to fabricate and repair the needed parts, including items such as circuit breakers, switch panels, and junction boxes.
The typical work environment for an avionics technician is inside an aircraft hangar, but this job may require work in the outdoors if an emergency is to arise. Avionics technicians will often work long hours around the clock, due to the nature of the aircraft business. Many employees will often be required to work both day and night shifts for a given period to ensure fairness among all employees.
In order to qualify as an avionics technician, a candidate would need to have avionics training and a certification in avionics. Many organizations prefer prior experience, such as military employment. Due to the nature of the work as an avionics technician, the candidate must have a strong work ethic as well. The candidate must also have organized written and communication skills, as they need to be able to document maintenance and troubleshoot results.
