Field engineers in senior positions are accountable for the entire design, integration, and maintenance of engineering products. This includes the design and integration of engineering products to a client's existing system and resolving all technical issues, and making sure that the product functions properly. Once the products are installed the field engineers in charge of them maintain them and provide service in accordance with their customers' requirements; they can also upgrade and replace existing products too.

Field engineers in the senior ranks are accountable for the continuous examination of the company's manufacturing products in order to assure that they are quality controlled and efficient operation. If there is a problem on the job they have to determine the root cause and recommend for corrections or updates to production. They should be aware of all aspects of the manufacturing process of their products in order to ensure the proper delivery of an operational product. They could be involved in the conceptualization or design, manufacturing or testing a product in order to ensure that it is properly installed, maintained and evaluate its usage on the job.
