Fashion stylists are responsible for dressing clients from head to toe in stylish wear that fits appropriately and is tailored to that particular occasion or event. As such, these stylists create the first impression that the client portrays, and must locate and match clothing, shoes, and accessories to create outfits for clients such as actors, politicians, news anchors, musicians, and many more. They work primarily on TV or film sets, backstage at concerts, or in their own personal work settings.

Fashion stylists must have extensive knowledge of current fashion trends and brand names, as well as an in-depth understanding of the history of fashion. Knowledge of body styles and anatomy and a high degree of creativity are also important to design flattering ensembles and create styles which will catch others' attention. Communication skills are beneficial for working with models, make-up artists, and clients alike.

A college degree is not required for this position, but prior experience as a fashion designer is highly beneficial. Some employers offer paid and unpaid internships to learn the business of fashion design, and degrees are also available in fashion and may increase employment opportunities in the field. Knowledge and prior experience are valued highly, and many work in other capacities within the field before becoming professional stylists.

Working conditions may vary depending on the employer and position. Fashion stylists tend to work indoors in climate-controlled environments, though frequent travel may be required. Nights, weekends, holidays, and even special events may be necessary for the job, and light lifting and moving of materials should also be expected.
