An undergraduate degree from architecture, interior design or a related field, and previous work experience in the field are typically required for this job however some employers will consider candidates who have had significant accomplishments as interior or exterior designers without an education. Experience with Auto CAD and Microsoft Office is usually required in addition.

Interior and exterior designers should be skilled in residential design which includes various types of furniture (antique and contemporary) fabrics and finishes paints, as well as other factors that are relevant.
