Medical assistants who are certified (CMAs) are responsible for duties and responsibilities that relate to the care of patients in a clinical setting. The CMA manages the inventory of equipment for rooms for examination and procedures as well as assists in the management of the flow of patients, and also organizes the environment of the clinic to ensure the safety of patients. They also are responsible for cleaning the supplies. The CMA is under the close supervision by the physician in determining the competencies of a person and performing duties in the clinic during patient care. The CMA is accountable directly to the manager of clinic or the lead nurse who's accountable for the administration oversight.
CMAs offer direct care to patients and also perform the functions of laboratory testing staff in conjunction to the department of laboratory. The hours of a CMA could include weekends, nights and holidays.
CMAs must be graduates of an accredited institution from a program for nurses or medical assistants. They must also have appropriate certifications, which differ according to the location of their practice. A lot of hospitals and clinics have their own certifications which require a CMA must obtain before being employed. Being able to carry out CPR is required by law.
