A media manager is responsible for overseeing interactions with the press and media at large and enhancing the effectiveness of press and publicity functions. They ensure the protection of their company's image and that it is presented in a consistent and coordinated manner, which includes gathering and disseminating information to the press and staff.

Media managers work with key departments in their organization to provide social media strategies and organize day-to-day social media activities, as well as develop and expand the organization’s online communities and outreach efforts. Media managers also work with staff and executive management regarding breaking news or crisis management situations, as needed. They also work with their team on the design and creation of promotions and social ad campaigns.

Media managers must have effective communication skills to ensure the company's reputation is promoted and allow for the development of relationships with national and regional press contacts. Those in this position also plan and oversee press-related events, assemble press kits, and research and write press materials. They are also responsible for analyzing and measuring the results of all media projects.

This position requires at least ten years of advertising/marketing-related work experience, with five or more years of media and/or management experience, including working with agencies and vendors. At least five years of experience in budget management is another typical requirement.

This position requires a Master's degree in Business Administration, and is typically full-time. Travel is required in some cases, although most work is done in an office setting.
