The flight test engineer is accountable for a variety of aspects related to the operation and maintenance of aircraft. They oversee all aspects of flight including space flight and rotary wing flight (helicopters) and fixed-wing flights. They also closely monitor pilots and collaborate with them to ensure a safe and comfortable flight for the passengers.

Flight test engineers usually work inside airplanes, typically for ten hours a day, or up to 18 hours. Test engineers working on flight tests work very closely with the staff of airplanes to ensure that everything is working smoothly. their typical working environment is one of teamwork to ensure that all aircrafts, helicopters and space shuttles operate correctly. Their job responsibilities include being behind the copilot in the cockpit, and making sure that the valves and levers that need to be turned or pulled are in place to ensure that pilots are able to reach them.

The flight test technicians also conduct pre-flight and post-flight checks in the cockpit as well as all around the plane to ensure that everything is in place for the next flight. The flight test technicians also manage the heating, air conditioning and oxygen safety controls.

The majority of those in this job are educated from Aerospace Engineering, Cognitive Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Employers usually require a bachelor's degree in at least two of these areas.

  • Collect and analyze flight test data, and contribute to the generation of technical reports.You will assist in data collection during flight tests, analyze the gathered data, and contribute to the creation of comprehensive technical reports that document the test results.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to identify and troubleshoot issues encountered during flight tests.
