TSU was founded in 1878 and is one of the first Russian higher educational institutions to choose the path of innovation. The university has been developing in this direction since 1993, when it opened its first Innovation Center for Siberian higher educational institutions and participated in the creation of the first Technology Park. TSU was awarded national research status in 2010. The university's high standing as an innovator-active university has been confirmed by significant victories in Russian government competitions. These included the successful implementation of three integrated projects that build high-tech production facilities and attracted top scientists to the university. TSU's participation in Russia's modern economic development is evident in its top laboratories and collaboration with university teams. A belt of small, innovative businesses, including 16 that were opened under Federal Law 217, shows the best of TSU's capabilities. This is due to the implementation projects in the most prestigious funds and participation in TEMPUS TACIS international programmes (17 projects).
