A manager of production and operating workers, also known as a first-line supervisor, typically oversees 20 or more front-line employees. The workers under supervision of the first-line supervisor are most likely laborers that complete production on-site. The first-line supervisor must watch over these employees and ensure that high production speed and quality are met. They may at times need to hire new employees, as well as train new hires. Another important component of the job of a first-line supervisor is employee safety; the manager must ensure that all safety guidelines are met, and they develop and implement strategies to ensure a safe work setting, including identifying potential hazards on the job site.Ideally, a first-line supervisor has previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing or production field; typically, three to five years is preferred. In addition, a bachelor’s degree in management, engineering, business, or a related field may be necessary. The first-line supervisor also needs excellent communication skills and experience with spreadsheets and data. The production environment is fast-paced, so a first-line supervisor should be able to keep up and relate to employees well.
