Operations engineers manage and carry out tasks that are related to the resolution of operational problems within their organizations. They design and analyze processes that improve the flow of work, manage the layout of equipment, and to prevent accidents. Operations engineers also oversee workshops for employees as well as process cycle times and production records, and assist in cost control and reducing. They also have the responsibility of creating, planning, and revising the current and future designs of layouts of equipment and facilities. Furthermore, they must be able to monitor changes in processes after the implementation of their plans, making adjustments and providing suggestions for improvement when needed. The hours of operations engineers can differ based on the requirements of their business, However, they usually operate during normal working hours. They usually split their time between offices and the production plant of their company.

The educational requirements for this job differ by company; however having a bachelor's degree from an industrial engineer or in a related field could be required. The most relevant certifications are usually preferred. Operations engineers should have great communication skills as they are required to present operational problems and suggestions to their managers. They must also have an understanding of statistics process control (SPC) tools as well as the ability to guide different teams to make improvements to processes.
