Description

Surface mount technology (SMT) machine operators operate SMT machines that solder small components such as transformers, circuits, sockets and various electronic components. A good manual dexterity is required to align, position and position parts for SMT machines, which need to be maintained by replenishing their supply as well as programming the machines in a timely way. They also need to monitor the output of the machines to ensure the quality of their output, and maintenance and calibration is required regularly for the machines, along with repair and troubleshooting when the machines aren't functioning correctly.

Experience in assembly and soldering expertise are required to be considered for this job, however certain jobs provide on-the-job instruction. Much of the work is done by the SMT machine, but some tasks must be performed manually, and this work usually takes place in a factory environment which may be loud and not temperature-controlled. It is essential to achieve all productivity and deadline objectives and make sure that the work area is clear of any hazards throughout the day, and the machines must be ready to perform the next task as soon as it is possible to reduce time. SMT operators also need to keep track of and record data from the output. The ability to use computers and to work with programs such as Microsoft Word are necessary for this job, and a graduation from high school is usually the minimum prerequisite.
